Kids get hands on at Eco Art Day

Fifteen Ormond Beach students spent their day off Monday, March 11, at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s first Eco Art Day.

It started with a garden tour, as the 15 local students in attendance sketched the different plants they found along the way. But about halfway through the Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s first Eco Art day, Monday, March 11, kids got to plunge their hands into soil and make a garden of their very own.

Instructed by Sherill Schoening, museum curator of education and outreach, Eco Art Day was held on local schools’ teacher-duty day. Participants, ages 6-12, spent half of the time doing science and nature projects outside; they then headed into the classroom after lunch to create garden-themed art.

Schoening, a former Girl Scout and leader, also incorporated Girl Scout requirements into the program, so that participants could earn badges just from participating. She is also working on incorporating Boy Scout requirements for use in the next program.

“I just love scouting, and the activities,” Schoening said. “And I felt it fit in with what we’re doing here. … You can make anything and create your own world.”
