Ormond Beach Kopy Kats are stealing the spotlight this weekend with their annual variety show.

When the red curtains go up, the audience bears witness to all the glitzy costumes, perfected dance routines and well-rehearsed musical numbers. While applauding, they’re only slightly aware of what it takes put on a show — and what happens after that red curtain drops.

For 26 years, the Kopy Kats have been making magic happen on the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center stage and giving actors from all walks of life a chance to step into the spotlight.

“There are so many different cultures, and we’re all just blending together,” said Producer Aggie Murphy. “We have only peace and harmony backstage. Everyone’s life is enhanced by the bonding we have here.”

The cast of 40 local actors — the majority being from Ormond Beach —have been rehearsing since January to put on the annual variety show. Opening this weekend, the production “There’s No Business Like Show Business” will feature Broadway performances from shows like “Annie Get Your Gun” and “Anything Goes.”

Director Jerome DeVito, who is also the owner of South Beach Dance in Daytona, said that even though most of the performers are over 50 years old, he enforces the same rigorous practice he uses on the professional dancers at his studio.

“I treat them just as hard,” he said. “They give up a lot to be here. It’s amazing that these people are at this age and are actually dancing to this ability.”
