LABOR STATS: Unemployment drops another 1.7% in Volusia County

Unemployment numbers for October in Volusia County, Flagler County and the state of Florida all decreased over the past year.

Unemployment improves across region, state

The October unemployment rates in the counties that comprise the Center for Business Excellence region were 6.5% in Volusia County and 9.4% in Flagler County, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Bureau of Labor Market Statistics.

This compares to 8.2% in Volusia County last October, and 10.7% in Flagler County last October. For the state, unemployment in Florida was 6.6% this October compared to 8.1% a year ago.

Out of a labor force of 285,513, there were 19,511 unemployed residents in the region of Volusia and Flagler counties.

In Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach ...

In the Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach metro area, nonagricultural employment was 158,600 in October. Total nonagricultural employment was up 2,400 jobs (1.5%) over the year.

Six of the 10 major industries gained jobs over the year, led by trade, transportation and utilities (1,100 jobs added). Leisure and hospitality also added jobs (900); as did mining, logging and construction, and professional and business services (400 jobs each); manufacturing (300 jobs); and financial activities (100 jobs).

Government lost 700 jobs and education and health services lost 100 jobs over the year. Information and other services remained unchanged. Manufacturing employment grew 3.6%.

In Flagler County ...

In Flagler County, nonagricultural employment was 20,000 in October. Total nonagricultural employment was down 700 jobs (3.4%) over the year. Retail trade employment gained 100 jobs (3.1%.)

No industries gained jobs over the year in Flagler County. Government lost 300 jobs over the year while trade, transportation and utilities; information; professional and business services; and other services each lost 100 jobs over the year.

Mining, logging and construction; manufacturing; financial activities; education and health services; and leisure and hospitality remained unchanged over the year in Flagler County.
