Ormond by the Sea Lions nearing 10th year; and, OBO classifieds: a way of life.

We’re Lions. Hear us roar
Dear Editor,
With the 10-year anniversary of the Ormond by the Sea Lions Club coming next year, I wanted to take a second to let your readers know what our club is all about. Simply: We serve. We believe that community is what we make it.
But don’t take it from me. Here is what a few members say about what being a Lion means to them.
“I have found it rewarding to be with such a nice group of local people that are making a difference for others,” Greg Evans, charter member said. “I also respect how the community supports us.”
“It is a way to help people with a group that I could not be able to do by myself — and with the support and help of a worldwide group,” Les Walter says.
Lions support sight programs (we have provided over 150 eye exams and glasses to the needy and recently helped a homeless man with refurbishment of his glass eye) and recycles hearing aids, cell phones and ink cartridges. Collection boxes can be found at Alfie’s Restaurant, Klip and Kurl Beauty Salon, Regions Bank, Grace Lutheran Church and Riverview United Methodist Church Thrift Shop.
Guiding Lion Gwen Dean says, “Lions help out in the community. I wanted to be a part of that. So I started working with the preschool vision-screening program. …The joy that comes is when you see a student with their family in the grocery store, they come up to you and thank you so much. … For me, that is much better than a paycheck. It does my heart good. And that's why I am and have been a Lion for 33 years now.”
Diabetes-prevention is also large part of our service. If you need a screening, call and it can be arranged. We also raise funds through White Cane Days, book sales and raffles, and we clean highways and beaches.
Organized by President Lion Frank White, our third-annual Miniature Golf Tournament fundraiser will be Sunday, March 17, at Pirates Cove Golf Course. Our Diabetic Lions Strides Walk will be next month, April 13, at Bicentennial Park.
“I joined the Lions Club for the opportunity to serve members in our community, as well as other people in need,” Andrea Stevens says.
“I have had vision issues from birth, so helping others with vision problems through eyeglass recycling and fundraising resonates on a personal level," Peggy Bull, a new member, said. "I feel blessed to be part of an organization where I can help so many people and have fun at the same time!”
The Ormond by the Sea Lions Club has 21 members and one student member. Meetings are held 6 p.m. the first and third Wednesdays of each month, at Alfie’s Restaurant, 1666 Ocean Shore Blvd.
