A grandparents' worry

2:30 p.m. — First block of Southern Trace Blvd.

Larceny. A pair of grandparents were scammed out of almost $5,000 after receiving a fraudulent phone call from someone pretending to be their grandson claiming to be in jail for manslaughter.

The concerned grandparents initially wired $2,000 to a bondsman based out of Jacksonville in order to get their "grandson" out of jail. Later, the bondsman called the grandparents and told them he needed an additional $2,400 to have the manslaughter charge off their "grandson's" record, since the car he had supposedly hit was driven by a pregnant female who had a miscarriage. In total, police report the pair were scammed of $4,992.

After wiring the money and not hearing back from their grandson, the couple began to call him and leave messages on his voicemail. The following day, their grandson replied and informed them he was at home and had not been in an accident.
