Ormond Beach kids shook what their math teachers gave them last month, bringing home the first-place prize for both school and individual student, at the countywide MathCounts competition.

Sam Markowitz, of Ormond Beach Middle School, was the county’s individual student champion. He placed second last year; he is also a Volusia County Math PRISM award winner.

Six of the Top 10 individual MathCounts winners came from Ormond Beach Middle School, as well — as did the runner-up, a sixth-grader. The facility also took home the first-place crown for best overall middle school.

Both Markowitz and Ormond Beach Middle will compete in the state competition March 15, in Orlando.
