California resident Janab Kareem, whose family continues to reside in Ormond Beach, was selected to be the feature for television network VH1's "Dear Mama" promo, sponsored by Geico.

The promo focuses on the encouragement and empowerment of women. Kareem is a veteran, has an active role with her community and continues to be close to her own family. She will be attending a red carpet event for the promo in Hollywood on May 3.

The Tomoka Travelers Daytona Beach RV club recently donated $250 to the Emory L. Bennett Veterans Nursing Home in Daytona Beach. The funds were used to purchase Walmart gift cards, T-shirts and baseball caps for the veterans. The items were used as Bingo prizes. 

City to celebrate Earth Day

Ormond Beach will host its 26th-annual Picnic on the Plaza on Thursday, April 19, to celebrate the 48th anniversary of Earth Day, which will take place on Sunday, April 22. 

There will be booths from the American Cancer Society, MainStreet Farmer's Market, Halifax River Audubon, Schmancy Pops and more offering information, giveaways and products for sale. Shred Pros will also be offering free shredding services in front of City Hall near the flag pole. Each person may bring up to five letter size bankers boxes or up to three legal bankers boxes; no garbage, plastic or metal items (other than staples and paper clips) permitted.
