John Upchurch, of Ormond Beach, announced his candidacy as a Democrat for the 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives at an event on Jan. 30. Upchurch was a business attorney who became a small business owner and now operates Odyssey Travel, a travel agency with locations in Ormond Beach and Jacksonville, according to his website, voteupchurch.com.

Born in St. Augustine, Upchuch has lived in Ormond Beach over 36 years.

“Our community needs stronger representation in Washington by someone who knows our area inside and out,” he said in a statement.

Upchurch said his priorities are investing in local infrastructure to alleviate flooding and road congestion; improving the Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment; addressing criminal justice reform and the opioid crisis; and fighting for practical immigration reform.

Upchurch worked in Tallahassee at the Florida office of the Attorney General. After moving back to Ormond Beach in 2001, he worked as an attorney in the law firm of Heebner, Baggett, Upchurch and Garthe. He was President of the Volusia County Bar Association in 2006-2007.

He is a graduate of Furman University and Stetson College of Law. He and his wife have two children.
