Lucky's Market will open in Ormond Beach sooner than expected, a company spokesperson confirmed.

A city document from August had previously stated Lucky's aimed to be in operation by June or July of 2019. Lucky's Market spokeswoman Krista Torvik said in an email that the company actually hopes to open the store sometime in the spring.

The grocery store will occupy the 27,650-square-foot former Food Lion building at 101 E. Granada Blvd., which has been empty since 2012 when Food Lion closed its doors. For the past six years, city staff has been attempting to redevelop the blighted building by working to recruit a new tenant, preferably a grocer.

On Aug. 8, 2018, the City Commission approved a growth assistance program agreement with Lucky's Market that included an incentive package of $11,000 for job creation, a 10-year reimbursement of the business's tangible taxes up to $50,500 and $52,500 for Lucky's Market's capital investment on construction and new equipment. Lucky's capital investment came to $4.3 million.

According to the city document, the grocery store will create 30 more full-time jobs in the city, with an average starting wage for store clerks at $25,000 per year, plus an average of $6,000 in benefits.
