Mainland High School opened its bowling season in style Tuesday, with the boys team sweeping all three of its games against Flagler Palm Coast High, at Ormond Lanes.

Mainland’s J.T. Vail had the night’s high scores, of 232 and 256.

The FPC girls’ team took its first two games, but Mainland rallied to win the final matchup.

The Mainland boys outscored the FPC boys with a pin total of 2,380 to 1,785. The FPC girls knocked down 2,062 pins, while the Mainland girls had 1,803.

“We’re where I thought we’d be,” said Mainland Coach Pat Monahan. “I’m happy.”

Even though his girls lost, he said he saw some good individual efforts. He thinks his team will will make the district championship but added that there will be tough competition ahead.

FPC Coach Kim Saltmarsh said Mainland is always a powerhouse, and she’s happy with the boys’ performance.

“Our guys did fine,” she said. “We’re going to do well against other teams.”

She said the FPC team has been bowling very well in practice and she has high expectations for the year.

The Mainland boys were district champions three of the past four years. All of the FPC girls on last year’s team went to the state championship in the individual competition.

Although the atmosphere is mostly fun and relaxed during the matchups, teams still lead cheers while the parents and coaches yell encouragement.

Before the match, the coaches were giving advice such as, “Concentrate on each game; don’t worry about the match” and, “Think strikes and spares, strikes and spares.”

The bowling season extends until November, when the state championships are scheduled. The district winner and runner-up go to the championships.

Two points are given for winning a game and an extra point is given for most total points so the official tally was Mainland boys beating FPC boys 7 to 0 and FPC girls beating Mainland girls 5 to 2.
