Police were called to resort in regard to a suspicious person.

A man from Cape Canaveral, identified as Dean O’Hara, 50, jumped to his death at the Royal Floridian Resort, 51 S. Atlantic Ave., after being confronted by police about 4:33 a.m. on July 28.

Ormond Beach police responded to a call from hotel security about a suspicious person pulling on door handles, according to a press release from police. When officers arrived, hotel employees said they first saw the man loitering in the game room. The man quickly left, and the employees said they noticed a closet had been broken into and wine was stolen.

They told the officers they later saw the man on the sixth floor, pulling on door handles.

Police officers located the man on the seventh floor, where he was sitting down and drinking wine. When the male saw the officer, he pulled out a small black knife.

As the officers were giving commands to drop the knife, the man turned away from them, ran down the hallway and jumped off the balcony, according to the press release.

The male was pronounced dead by an Ormond Beach Fire Department paramedic. A driver’s license and Social Security card were found in his wallet. A police spokesman said there was also a “vague suicide note” in the wallet.
