Conductor said man appeared to be confused or lost.

A pedestrian fatality on the railroad tracks just north of Calle Grande Street is being investigated by Ormond Beach police and Florida East Coast Railroad police. The incident happened about 9:40 p.m. on July 15.

The train conductor told police that while traveling southbound, he saw a white male walk out of the woods from the west and then stand on the tracks. He said the man appeared to be confused or lost.

The conductor applied the emergency brake system, but could not stop because the train was only 100 yards from the man. He said that just before impact, the man stepped toward the west, but was hit by the train. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the county medical examiner took possession of the body.

No identification was found on the man. He had a broken phone and a one dollar bill in his pocket. Police found a Domino’s Pizza hat and a pair of flip flops in the vicinity. One of the flip flips was near the point of impact.

Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact Ormond Beach Police at 677-0731 or Crimestoppers at 277-TIPS or 1-888-277-TIPS.
