Memorial Day youth essay contest

Essay contest is an opportunity for students to learn more about veterans and the military and win cash prizes.

During the month of April the Lohman Community Outreach will be accepting essays for its annual youth essay contest, “The True Meaning of Memorial Day.”

The contest is open to all Volusia County middle and high school students, including private, charter and home schooled students, to allow them to learn about the service and sacrifice of veterans and members of the military.

Deadline for essay submissions is April 30. Essays should be mailed to: Lohman Funeral Home, 733 W Granada Blvd, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.

The winning essays will be announced at the Memorial Day Youth Essay Contest awards on Monday, May 29 at Daytona Memorial Park, 1425 Bellevue Ave., Daytona Beach. Winners will read their essays at the event.

A total of 6 prizes will be awarded; $500 will be awarded to one each middle and high school first place winner; $200 will be awarded to one each first place runner-up at both middle and high school levels and $100 will be awarded to one each second place runner-up in both middle and high school levels.

Winning essays will be featured on the Lohman Funeral Homes, Cemeteries & Cremation website, social media page and other related print and electronic media.
