If a 14-year-old tells you that you look cool, you know you’ve accomplished something. That was the sentiment expressed by Nicole Figueroa when her daughter, Kiyah, complimented her after her makeup was done at Beauty Express 911, a new Ormond Beach business.

“I look hip!” Figueroa laughed, after her daughter approved of her appearance.

“As you mature, you need to change your makeup. You want to look youthful but not like you’re trying to look youthful.”

Carole Girman, owner, Beauty Express 911

Owner Carole Girman said she now has her dream job at her studio in the Offices at Oak Park, 595 N. Nova Road, Suite G109, applying makeup and teaching the techniques.

“This is what I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. “I put on a little color and their confidence level goes through the roof. It’s just phenomenal. That’s what it’s all about — making women feel good about themselves as they age.”

Girman also does make-up for wedding parties, fashion shoots or other special occasions, saying the “911” in the name relates to the panic women can feel when a big event is approaching.

Learning the latest

Girman has 25 years of experience in beauty and makeup, mostly working in salons while also freelancing for weddings, events, etc. For the last three years, she worked for QVC, demonstrating a product line throughout the country.

“Women were constantly asking if they could take me home, so I could do their makeup the next day,” Girman said. “I thought there should be a place where women feel comfortable learning.”

She has no products to sell, so her clients don’t have any pressure to buy.

She said many of her customers want to learn how to apply the newest trend, such as a “cat-eye” or “contour.” There’s a lot on YouTube, and many published articles, she said, but they are often time-consuming and intimidating. She said it doesn’t have to be complicated and makeup can be applied in five minutes.

Makeup needs change as a woman gets older, she said.

“As you mature, you need to change your makeup,” she said. “You want to look youthful but not like you’re trying to look youthful.”

Figueroa said she had known Girman for 12 years, and had her do the makeup for her wedding. She drove over from Orange City for the recent makeup session.

“It’s worth the trip,” she said.

Look good, feel better

Girman hopes to do workshops, such as for young girls going from junior high to high school.

She is currently involved with the Look Good, Feel Better, seminars sponsored by the American Cancer Society to help women undergoing cancer treatment with skin care and makeup. She recently teamed with Lisa Konietzky, an esthetician, who also has an office in Oak Park, to conduct one of the seminars at a local hospital.

Beauty Express 911 is open Monday through Saturday by appointment. Contact Girman at 212-7791 or [email protected].
