Seabreeze’s football season has been over for a few weeks, but the pursuit of senior Charles Nelson is entering the backstretch.

A few weeks ago, Nelson picked up another offer from West Virginia University. The Mountaineers can be added to a growing list of elite programs that want Nelson, including the University of Southern California, Florida, Wisconsin and Notre Dame.

Seabreeze coach Marc Beach confirmed earlier this week that Nelson will take an official visit to Notre Dame Dec. 13. Nelson is also scheduled to take an official visit to West Virginia Jan. 24, according to rivals.com.

Nelson, who plays offense, defense and special teams, is a threat anytime he gets his hands on the ball. He had more than 1,000 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns during his senior season.

Four Mainland football players were selected this week to play in the 2013 National Underclassmen Combine Senior All-American Bowl, which will take place Dec. 27-30, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The players are Trey Rodriguez, Nick Bruno, D.J. Copeland and Kailik Williams.

Pride seventh-graders win national title

It has happened: The Ormond Beach Pride seventh-grade team captured a national championship last weekend.

The games were played at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex and at Stetson University’s football stadium.

The Pride won the first game, 42-6, over a team from Kentucky. And then in the championship game, the Pride knocked off the St. Louis Cardinals, 27-19.

The national tournament featured teams from around the country, according to coach Brian Colubiale.
