The Anytime Fitness franchise in the Trails Shopping Plaza at 302 N. Nova Road has new owners who are excited about getting their own fitness studio after talking about it for many years. Luca Pomaro and Bonnie Williamson, a married couple, bought the business June 3.
Pomaro, a former professional hockey player in Italy, and Williamson, who played soccer in high school, have been lifelong fitness enthusiasts.
“When I went to college, I didn’t play soccer anymore, so I started going to gyms,” Williamson said. “I never stopped.”
Fitness is not the only thing they have in common. There’s also wine. Both had their own wine import business and met in Sicily where they were shopping. Pomaro left his native Italy to come to America where they opened an import business together, which continues today.
Pomaro said wine in moderation is healthy.
“It’s been around for millennia,” he said.
The travel requirements of their wine business, with long hours of sitting, made them conscious of fitness even more. They were members of the Ormond Beach Anytime Fitness when they heard the owners were retiring after running it for 10 years.
“It worked out perfectly,” Williamson said.
They are excited about changes they plan for the facility, but do not want to make any announcements until further along, about a month from now.
Living nearby, they look forward to running a “neighborhood” gym.
“We’ve always been on the road and now we have an opportunity to be part of the community,” Williamson said. “We want to help people make health happen.”
They came to the area because Williamson’s parents retired to Palm Coast from Connecticut.
“We like Ormond Beach,” Williamson said. “It has a cool little downtown … a cool little vibe.”
