A new exercise studio has opened in Ormond Beach at 187 S. Yonge St., called Skyactive Strength Studio, and owner/trainer Phaedra Lee says visitors will find a difference from the standard gym.

“It appeals to people who want to use the facility at their own schedule,” she said.

The sign out front says, “24/7” Fitness Club, letting people know it’s available any time. Members get a key fob to open the door.

A grand opening is planned for 6 p.m. on Nov. 14.

Currently, a new member receives three sessions of personal training and a program customized for them. Then, they can use the facility whenever they want. After a while, they get reassessed.

“The goal is to train people to be independent,” Lee said. “It’s great for people who need a little bit of attention but not a lot of attention.”

The focus of the studio is strength training, which is the key for healthy living, Lee said. For example, bicyclists may have strong legs but may need upper body work to build their arms. Also, physical strength ties in with emotional and mental strength, she said.

Lee also emphasizes the peaceful and friendly atmosphere of the facility. Art by local artist Lisa Argentieri is displayed on the wall and owner/trainer Cy Manula said they want to get more.

“We want to have a gallery of local art,” Manula said.

The local art is part of their desire to be involved in the community. Manula said he has been in contact with the Volusia Literary Council and Special Olympics. He mentioned the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge as something they hope to be involved with.

The gym uses Fusion Fitness Design equipment, which is manufactured in Ormond Beach and includes strength, cardio, benches, weights, etc., as well as treadmills and elliptical equipment. They also have yoga and Pilates training.

The name “Skyactive” refers to “reach for the sky” in health.

Currently, the facility is staffed four hours a day, but they plan to hire full-time staff.
