Shanahan to take part in statewide coalition
Announced last week, a new group called the Florida Local Government Coalition aims to leverage the power of Florida’s 175,000-plus government workers to improve public service.
To improve inter-governmental communication, Florida’s 28 leading local government associations form the new coalition, to share knowledge, techniques and skills from each sector of local government — from the cops to the clerk’s office.
Ormond Beach City Manager Joyce Shanahan will be one of the participants.
“The people of Florida depend on local governments to keep their homes safe, pave their streets (and) preserve their parks …” said Shanahan, who is also past president of the Florida City and County Management Association. “That is an extraordinary amount of trust, and we must do everything we can to earn that trust each and every day.”

Woman asks politely then steals tow truck near Ormond Beach
A tow truck driver responded when a woman’s rental car broke down on Interstate 95. But not long after he arrived, the woman had climbed into his truck and was driving it northbound.
“I thought she was playin’” the man said, after the theft occurred Wednesday, July 24. The woman, Angela Estrella, 37, had asked the man if she could take his yellow flatbed to New York, and he, assuming she was kidding, said, “Sure!” She responded, “Really?” And then he followed up with a serious, “No.”
When he turned his back to Estrella, however, she hopped into his truck and started driving. Universal Towing then tracked the GPS on its vehicle and Estrella was located, and arrested, in Palm Coast, charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.
Local fires shot at would-be intruder
Police are investigating a burglary that occurred last Thursday, in the Spring Meadows subdivision.
The homeowner, Fred Lockey, heard noises by his sliding glass door and, on investigating, saw a man outside, attempting to remove the door from its tracks. Lockey retrieved his .357 magnum revolver and returned to the door, shouting that he had a gun, at which point, the suspect began to flee.
The suspect then abruptly turned around and ran back toward the Lockey, he told police, so he fired a single shot in order to scare the would-be intruder off. The suspect then fled the scene.
Due to darkness, Lockey could only describe the intruder as a 6-foot-tall male wearing a long-sleeved black shirt and blue jeans. Call 677-0731, or Crimestoppers, at 277-TIPS or 1-888-277-TIPS, with any information.
