Gov. Scott bans texting while driving, and signs 36 other bills

Gov. Rick Scott signed a statewide ban on texting while driving last week, making Florida the 41st state to enact the law.

The law makes texting while driving a secondary offense, which prohibits a person from manually typing or entering multiple letters, numbers, symbols or other characters into a wireless communications device. This includes text messaging, emailing and instant messaging through smart phones.

The bill still allows drivers to talk on their phones while driving, use them as GPS devices and text at red lights.

Scott also signed 36 bills May 30, including the following:

HB21 - A bill that requires the Department of Education to create a uniform and a statewide photo identification badge signifying that a noninstructional contractor has been screened to meet certain background requirements.

CS/HB 93 - A bill that allows individuals obtaining or renewing their motor vehicle registration or driver license to make a voluntary $1 contribution to assist the homeless.

CS/CS/HB 277 - A bill that prevents an increase in the assessed value of residential properties as a result of installing a renewable energy source device.

SB 342 - A bill that allows homestead properties to be rented for up to 30 days per calendar year, while maintaining the homestead classification.

CS/CS/HB 113 - A bill that makes it a third-degree felony for an adult to knowingly distribute material harmful to a minor or post materials harmful to a minor on public and private school property.

Votran adjusts routes

Bus service on the U.S. 1-Ridgewood Avenue corridor, the busiest route in Votran's greater Daytona Beach coverage area, will run every 30 minutes instead of every 60, beginning June 10.

The routes along that corridor, routes three and four, have been operating at capacity, Votran said, for the fifth consecutive year, making the increase necessary. The frequency increase was included in the 2012-21 Transit Development Plan, Votran said.

Call 761-7700.
