A fatal motorcycle crash occurs in town; city announces "reely" fun fishing tournament; and, check out this week's public works update and emergency stats.

Port Orange man dies in Ormond motorcycle crash
Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Saturday evening, involving 28-year-old Steven Rivera, of Port Orange.
Rivera and another motorcyclist, 38-year-old Migual A. Cortes-Rivera, of Daytona Beach, were heading southbound on North Ocean Shore Boulevard, when they each passed other vehicles at high speed, lost control and left the roadway near a curve, according to witnesses. Cortes-Rivera was transported to the hospital for serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.

Sign-ups are now open for the city's free, catch -and-release fishing tournament Saturday, Sept. 7, at Bailey Riverbridge Gardens, 1 N. Beach St. Prior registration is required and the tournament is limited to Ormond Beach residents.
The tournament is open to the first 30 teams, consisting of one adult and up to two kids ages 4-12). Registration can also be done at City Hall. Call 676-3250, or visit ormondbeach.org.

Maintenance crews trimmed trees on South Old Kings Road.
Urban Forestry removed a dead bay tree at Nova Community Park and a dead tree at South Ormond Neighborhood Center.
Asphalt crew fixed road after storm water line repair in Reflections Village and after a water utility repair on North Yonge Street and also made repairs on Cardinal Drive and Flamingo Drive.
The decking at the Magic Forest playground was repaired.
Some of the picnic tables and benches were relocated at Andy Romano Beachfront Park to allow for better wheelchair access under the picnic pavilions. Charcoal grills were also installed at a handicap-accessible level.

New this year, school crossings will be staffed 7-8 a.m. The uniform start time replaces what used to be a staggered morning schedule at the county’s 94 staffed crossings. The schedule for the afternoon crossings will continue to be staggered.
