The Volusia County Council voted against a measure that would allow dogs back on the beach.

Volusia County Council members voted on Thursday to abandon a proposal that would allow dogs on the beach for a trial period.

The discussion covered issues including parasites in dog feces, environmental impacts on birds and turtles, possible confrontations, citation fees and enforcement problems.

Public participation was mostly negative, with very little support for dog-friendly beaches.

Council member and District 4 representative Doug Daniels also opposed the proposal.

“We are trying to redevelop ourselves,” Daniels said. “We are trying to upgrade our standards. We’re not trying to go backwards. This is an urban beach and we need to start moving forward.”
