No handshakes or hugs will be allowed at Volusia high school graduations

Volusia high school seniors will need to stay six feet apart from each other and prevent from shaking hands or hugging during the upcoming graduation ceremonies. as outlined by the district's health and safety protocols for the event due to COVID-19.

Volusia County Schools announced the measures on Thursday, June 26, for the July 9-11 ceremonies at the Ocean Center. Tickets will be limited to two per graduate, and the district asks individuals who are considered at high risk or who are displaying fever-like or flu-like symptoms stay at home. Face masks are "highly recommended" for both the rehearsals and the ceremony, the news release states. Students, staff and attendees should bring their own masks.

During the rehearsal, there will be six-foot sections marked in the exhibit hall of the ocean center to show the students what six feet looks like, the news release states. After getting their temperatures checked, students will need to go to their designated line and stand on or by the markers. 

The no handshakes or hugs protocol will remain in effect as students walk across the stage. Students will receive a diploma cover and have their photograph taken after crossing the stage. 

After the rehearsals and ceremonies wrap up, VCS said everyone must leave immediately to avoid crowd gatherings.

The ceremonies will be livestreamed at vcsedu.org. The district will also the send the link to all families during the week of graduation ceremonies, as well as post it on social media and the district website. Videos of the ceremonies will also be made available later.
