OBPAL was created in 1996 to strengthen positive relationships between officers, youths and the Ormond Beach community. According to the city website, about 800 children, teens and families participate in the organization's programs and events each year.
The Ormond Beach Lions Club continues to raise money for its sight and hearing programs with its 17th-annual golf tournament taking place at the River Bend Golf Club on Saturday, October 13.
The tournament will feature a four-person flighted scrambled format. Prizes include airline tickets, TVs, golf clubs and a chance to win $1 million on a hole-in-one try. All players will receive a goody bag. Entry fee for the tournament costs $60 and includes a barbecue luncheon, greens fee, coffee and donuts. To register, call Scott Ryals at 882-0889.
The Rotary Club of Daytona Beach West cheered on the Special Olympic participants at a county swim meet on Saturday, July 21, as part of a partnership between both entities.

In association with Ormond MainStreet, M Flix Films will be soon be airing "The Artist Next Door," a documentary short about Ormond Beach's artistic community, at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5 on WDSC TV.
“This was a project of discovery for me," said Mitch Mentor, director and producer of M Flix Films, in a press release. "Even as a long-time community member, I had no idea we had such a wealth of talent in Ormond, and my goal was to take others on the journey with me as I discovered the talent for myself."
For the film, Mentor interviewed 16 artists — all local and professional. Mentor became interested in the local arts community when his son was a young artist. After spending a year fundraising, he brought on the city and MainStreet as partners. The original music for the project was scored and performed by Janie Ciceslki Plante.
For the seventh consecutive year, the city of Ormond Beach has received the Government Finance Officers Association's Distinguished Budget Presentation award, which represents an achievement by municipalities in meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting, according to a city press release.
To receive this award, Ormond Beach city staff had to satisfy nationally-recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how the city's budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communication device. Budget documents must rate "proficient" in all four categories, and in the 14 criteria within them, to receive the award.
The city's finance department was also awarded a certificate of recognition for budget presentation for being primarily responsible for the award.
