Halifax Health — Hospice is seeking caring and dedicated volunteers to provide assistance in the Ormond Beach area, according to a press release.
Volunteers can choose to help prepare meals; socialize with patients and families; or serve as a receptionist. Those who can assist with clerical duties, including data entry, are needed as well.
Those interested need to attend all three curriculums from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 6, 13 and 20 at the Halifax Health – Hospice Ormond Beach Care Center, 235 Booth Road, Ormond Beach.

The University of Florida, Volusia County Extension, is accepting applications for the 2017 Master Gardener Training Program, which runs from Jan. 10 through Feb. 16.
Master gardeners are volunteers who answer gardening questions at the Volusia County Agricultural Center, present horticultural classes to community groups, work with school gardens, help maintain the demonstration gardens at the extension office and staff information booths at fairs and garden shows.
They must attend an 80-hour course on urban gardening, earn 10 continuing education units each year and volunteer 75 hours the first year and 35 hours in following years.
The application is posted online at volusia.org/master-gardener. The $200 tuition includes books and materials. Applications and checks are due by Nov. 4.

Volusia County’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Division is planning chaperoned activities for students on days that schools are closed: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on teacher duty day, Oct. 21; and Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
The Robert Strickland Recreation Center, 1670 Strickland Range Road, Holly Hill, will host the following activities for children ages 6 to 11.
Oct. 21: A trip to Chuck E. Cheese in Port Orange. The cost is $30. Register at the recreation center from noon to 6 p.m. on Oct. 10, 12 and 14.
Nov. 11: Children will participate in playground activities and take a trip to the movies. The cost is $30. Register at the recreation center from noon to 6 p.m. Nov. 1, 3, 4 and 5.
Payment must be by check or money order. Students must bring lunch, drinks and/or spending money to each activity.

The City Commission approved a zoning map amendment Sept. 20 that allows a development called Cypress Trails, with 48 single family lots, to move forward. The zone change, from suburban residential to planned residential development, was necessary because the lots are less than one acre in size. The PRD process requires that the land have adequate water holding capacity, buffers, natural space, etc. The land is located on the east side of Clyde Morris Boulevard south of Hand Avenue.
At the Planning Board meeting where the zoning change was recommended, residents of nearby Aberdeen community said a traffic light is needed at their exit, and even more now with coming development. However, Clyde Morris in under Volusia County jurisdiction for traffic control.
After the vote to approve the zoning change, Mayor Ed Kelley told city staff that the city should recommend the county examine the need for a traffic light at the location.
It was the first reading of the ordinance.
