Ormond Beach's first mural was approved last week, and soon the blank wall adjacent to Ormond Garage Brewing's back entrance will portray a scene from the city's beach racing history.
The City Commission unanimously approved the mural at its meeting on Sept. 18, following recommendation from city staff and the Ormond Beach Arts District Mural Committee. Dorian Burt, authorized representative on behalf of Wivigeco LLC, one of developer Bill Jones' companies, said there were many great photos of the city and its early history to choose from. The chosen photograph local artist Thays França will recreate is one taken at the Granada Boulevard beach approach around 1908.
“This is going to be incredible for Ormond Beach," Burt said. "...It’s momentous. It’s big.”
França said it's going to be a large project, but that she's excited.
“I hope that with this mural, we create a sense of pride in our city, and that’s what I’m really, really hoping for — that this mural will bring us back in time, and forward, all at the same time," França said.
City Commissioner Susan Persis praised Franca and said the mural's vision is "perfect for the city." People will take photos in front of it once completed.
“We hope it’s the first of many, and we think it’s just going to be a great addition to the city," said Judith Stein, Ormond Beach arts district president.
