Ormond Beach artist Kathy Maloney Johnson will run against incumbent City Commissioner Dwight Selby in the upcoming November election to represent Zone 1.

In a candidate statement, Maloney Johnson said she decided to run for City Commission because "people need trustworthy local government." Maloney Johnson, who is endorsed by local political action committee CANDO 2, posed the question whether anyone will want to live in Ormond Beach if the natural beauty isn't preserved. She said the CANDO 2 meetings have alerted residents to the changes happening on Granada and that City Commissioners "dealt their blow" with gradual changes in wetland rules, zoning and "general horse-trading of land with like-minded men."

Maloney Johnson has lived in Ormond Beach since 1985. She is a watercolor and mixed-media artist as well as an art teacher. She worked in Volusia County for 25 years, seven of which she spent at Father Lopez Catholic High School.
