Ormond Beach resident Meredith Price celebrated his book "Gretel's Cross" with friends, new and longtime, at the Ormond Beach Library on July 10.
Price's historical fiction novel, published two years ago, tells a story of a German family's tragedy and romance between World War I and II — a result of Price combining dozens of oral family histories gathered over four decades of close ties to Germany with his partner
Hubert Forner and his family. At the book signing event, Price shared real life accounts of the period between 1914 and 1945 with the help of Diane Perrine and Kristin Bennett of the Ormond Beach Library.
Following his book launch at the St. James Episcopal Church in 2016, Price had a successful book tour in Germany, where he was interviewed by several newspapers and had two TV interviews. He also returned to the town of Mechenried, Germany, to the exact place where the photo for his German book cover was taken. He hand-carried the Ormond Beach Observer, which published an article about Price in 2016, to the spot as well.

The city of Ormond Beach was able to coordinate a volunteer effort to help a local property owner remove a fallen tree from his roof on Saturday, July 7.
The owner in need contacted the Ormond Beach Police Department the day before, requesting assistance since the tree had breached his home's roofing, the city reported. It took a collaborative effort
between police operations, the victim advocate coordinator and the neighborhood improvement division to reach out to Specialty Tree Care and Landscaping, a local company that helped the property owner take care of the issue.
The next day, volunteers removed tree branches and placed a tarp on the damaged area to remain there until the property owner's insurance company assesses the problem and permanent repairs are performed. In a press release, the city thanked Michael and Sheila Chapman from Specialty Tree Care and Landscaping for donating their time and talent to this effort.
