Four Ormond Beach firefighters have been deployed to Panama City to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael.

Ormond Beach Fire Chief Rusty Sievers said the five engine task force is being led by Fire Battalion Commander Nate Quartier. The Ormond firefighters up there with him, along with a couple from New Smyrna Beach Fire Depatment, are covering three to four fire stations and running their day-to-day calls for affected Panama City firefighters.

“It’s one of those things: neighbors helping neighbors," Sievers said.

This, coupled with the experience the Ormond firefighters will receive, makes up the importance of lending a hand, Sievers said. If it ever happened here, he said he knows task forces would also be in town to help Ormond Beach residents.

"It’s invaluable to send these people and they get that kind of real world experience,” Sievers said.

Quartier and the rest of the task force will return to Ormond Beach early next week. If additional assistance is needed, other firefighters will be sent to Panama City upon their return.
