Ormond Beach Lions Club honors its SHS student-athlete of the month

The Ormond Beach Lions Club recently named Timothy Crosby as its Seabreeze High School Student Athlete of the Month at its meeting on April 25.

Crosby serves as the captain of the school's varsity track and field/cross country team. He also coaches for the Youth Recreational Baseball program.

Aside from sports, Crosby serves a field commander and trombone leader for the Seabreeze Marching 100 and is part of the Riverbend Community Church Orchestra. He has also served as the Harvest Festival Supervisor for the church.

Crosby has the second highest GPA in the senior class, coming in at 4.6. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has earned the College Board's AP Scholar Award with Distinction. He has also been accepted for enrollment by the United States Air Force Academy, where he plans to major in aeronautical engineering to become a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force.

Thanks to fashions provided by Belk at The Pavilion of Port Orange, 12 Volusia County government members put on a fashion show for over 180 guests. The money raised helps the LWVVC continue its efforts to promote voting and civic engagement. The organization thanks all the elected officials who served as models as well as their sponsors and event attendees.

Daughters of the American Revolution present local beekeeper as featured speaker

The James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution invited Erin Taylor, beekeeper and landscape artist, to its April meeting in order for her to share her knowledge of bees.

She spoke about bee population, beekeeping and how to plant a bee-friendly garden. She owns the company, Art, Plant, Love, which produces and sells locally-made honey products. The organization also inducted Marlene Waehner as a new member.

Daytona State College honors students, employees at awards convocation

A total of 164 students and three employees were recognized at Daytona State College's annual outstanding student awards convocation on April 12.

These students were honored for their academic, community service and athletic achievements, and, 35 of them were named to the

Falcon Engagement Award program and 15 inducted into the college's Hall of Fame. As for faculty, Dr. Walter Saviuk, associate professor in the school of Biological and Physical Sciences, was selected to receive the Presidential Teaching Excellence Award.

Marek Juracek, director of software development, Information Technology, and Faith Testerman, Falcon Online Support Specialist, received Employee Excellence awards.

The awards convocation is a preceding event to the commencement ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday, May 14, at the Ocean Center.
