Ormond Beach Lions Club honors its student-athlete of the month for January
The Ormond Beach Lions Club chose Franco Perez as the club's January student-athlete of the month at Seabreeze High School.
Perez is the captain of the state champion soccer team and last year was named 3A State Player of the Year, Volusia/Flagler Soccer Player of the Year, All-Area First Team, Team MVP and Player of the Game for the state final. He hasn't let his academics fall behind either, and has been taking AP classes since his sophomore year. He maintains above a 4.0 GPA.
Ormond Beach Elementary 4th-graders express out-of-this-world opinions
Fourth-graders at Ormond Beach Elementary recently learned how to write editorials.
"One of the most powerful tools teachers have is writing for a purpose," Academic Coach Ruth Bethea wrote in an email to The Observer. "An assignment takes on new meaning when students are aware that they are actually participating in real world situations. Fourth-graders are just beginning to realize they have a 'voice.'"

Local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter welcome new member
The Captain James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution inducted Karen Knowles as a new member at their January meeting.
Also, Meredith Wayne Price, author of "Gretel’s Cross," was the featured speaker at the meeting.
