The Ormond Beach Lions Club honored Seabreeze High School senior Victor Lipsey as its student-athlete of the month for February.
Lipsey serves as the wrestling team captain and has accumulated a 47-8 record this year, according to a press release, while leading the team to its first-ever District Duals Championship. Aside from sports, Lipsey has earned a 3.8 GPA and scored a 1280 on the SAT.
He plans to attend the University of Florida and major in biology.
The Palmetto Club of Daytona Beach will award $1,000 scholarships to some local high school students graduating in May, based on need, academics and community awareness.
At Seabreeze High School, female students who plan to pursue a major in nursing, medicine or science are eligible for the Sara Dalton Scholarship. At Atlantic High School, all students may apply for the Palmetto Club Scholarship. Female students at Mainland High School are eligible for another Palmetto Club Scholarship, and at Spruce Creek High School, male and female students who demonstrate leadership qualities can apply for the Palmetto Club Past Presidents Scholarship.
Detailed information is available at each high school's guidance office and on the schools' websites, according to a press release. The deadline to apply is March 25. Call Scholarship Chairman Victoria Teel at 322-3602 for more information.
The Ormond Memorial Art Museum will be offering a series of comedy writing classes starting later this month.
Local poet David Axelrod will convene the sessions, scheduled to take place on Thursdays, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The dates for the workshops are March 26, April 2, 9 and 16.
Axelrod got his start in comedy back in 1962 as an editor of a college humor magazine called "Yahoo," which was banned in Boston, according to a press release. He has worked in comedy clubs and also tried to make it in Hollywood.
“You see how successful that was,” said Axelrod in the press release. “But I learned a lot and I’ll have fun sharing jokes, tricks and techniques with workshop participants."
The co-sponsored workshops by Creative Happiness Institute will study stagecraft, stand-up, memoirs, stories and limericks.
