For its work revitalizing the city's downtown district, Ormond Beach Mainstreet was honored by Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner, who named the group Florida's Main Street Program of the Month.
Tasked with making recommendations to the Ormond Beach City Commission regarding how Community Redevelopment Area funds are spent, Mainstreet aims to make downtown Ormond more attractive for visitors and residents through projects and events, in part by developing most of the area surrounding East Granada Boulevard into an arts district.
Currently, Mainstreet, led by Executive Driector Julia Truilo, is also working with the Florida Department of Transportation to put in medians and a pedestrian crossing to slow traffic near the Halifax River bridge -- a project which has been three years in the making.
“It takes some enlightened arguing to get FDOT to understand that, perhaps, as fast as possible is not so great for (every roadway),” Trulio said, adding that the project is slated to be completed in about a year.
Mainstreet also organizes the Farmers' Market, which takes place every Thursday morning at The Casements.
