The mayor of Ormond Beach issued a proclamation on Thursday, July 2, deeming wearing a face covering in the city a necessity, and urging residents and businesses to do so when social distancing isn't possible.

The proclamation is not a mandate, but the city hopes residents will voluntarily comply.

“I know masks can be uncomfortable, especially in the heat of summer, but we are at a critical juncture for our City’s fight against COVID-19,” said Mayor Bill Partington in a city press release. “We need everyone's help to keep our economy running and part of that fight is wearing face coverings to help slow the spread of this virus.”

The proclamation follows Volusia County Council Chair Ed Kelley's request for citizens to wear masks for the next 30 days to prevent further spikes of COVID-19 cases. The cities of Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach have both issued a mask mandate.
