The Ormond Beach Middle School Chorus will attempt to raise enough funds at the game to buy new uniforms for students, as well as send a few kids to Germany.

The chorus department at Ormond Beach Middle School is hoping to send students to Germany for an exchange program, and also replace some old uniforms while they’re at it, through a February charity basketball event.

“(Students) have worn the same dresses for several years, and they were hand-me-downs from a previous school,” organizer Suzanne Repole said.

The Ormond Beach Middle School Chorus will host the Harlem Legends in a friendly Globetrotter-style basketball game 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Vince Carter Athletic Center of Mainland High School.

The legendary Michael Douglas of the Globetrotters boast that the Legends have not lost a game since Lassie was a puppy. But Constance Poitier, Ormond Middle choir director, is confident that the home team, made up of teachers, law enforcers, coaches, firefighters and marines, and put together by Assistant Principal LaShaun Troutman, will give them a run for their money, finally raising enough to buy a new student wardrobe, after five years fundraising.

Proceeds from the game will benefit a choir exchange program to Germany. Admission is $15 to $20. A 2 p.m. basketball clinic will also be held, for $25. And a 3 p.m. Kids Shoot for Hoops event will be held, as well, for $1.

The game will be played in memory of Jeffrey Schoenwetter, son of John and Linda Schoenwetter, of Crossroads Baptist Gospel Choir, in Daytona Beach. Jeffrey Schoenwetter died as a result of his military service overseas.

To sponsor a student’s flight to Germany, checks can be made payable to the Ormond Beach Chorus, 151 Domicilio Ave., Ormond Beach, F.L. 32174.
