On Monday, Sept. 30, Stan Lee's United Martial Arts held a black belt ceremony for an Ormond Beach honors student.

Brian Blackwood, 13, earned a first degree black belt after successfully performing the school's enitre striking and grappling curriculums as well as a self-defense choreography and a board-breaking demonstration. Chief instructor Stan Lee said Blackwood performed three board breaks, each of which was through two inches of pine wood. He said that kind of board break is usually performed by adults.

"Brian is an amazing individual," Lee said. "He is very intelligent and athletic."

Blackwood has been training for four years at the school. He is currently in eight grade at Ormond Beach Middle School.
