Real Estate Agent Caryn Baker recently took on a new venture after being appointed president of Avenues 12 in June.

Realty Pros Real Estate Agent Caryn Baker is doing more than just selling houses — she’s helping to create recovery homes for women with substance abuse.

In June Baker was appointed president of the board of directors of Avenues 12, a program that offers two recovery houses to help women with substance abuse issues become productive members of society.

“Women come in and they are required to contribute to the house, service hours in the community and get a job,” Baker said. “We started out with one home for the women and slowly acquired a second. We’re opening sober apartments Oct. 16 this year. Our next goal is to open a recovery home that is specifically for women veterans.”

Baker said she joined the board when it first was established because she’s dealt with substance abuse in her personal life.

“There’s been substance abuse in my family,” Baker said. “I’ve had some family members that suffered, some that recovered and some are still struggling unfortunately.”
