Multiple District 35 Lions of Florida, Bahamas, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao celebrated its 100th anniversary at the beginning of May at the Florida Hotel and Conference Center in Orlando, where Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club past president Greg Evans welcomed over 300 lions from across the state and the Caribbean.
Soon thereafter, district luncheons were held and the theme of District 35-0 was "Putting on the ritz." OBTS President Lion Mary Yochum accepted an award for sponsoring the winning Peace Poster contest. At a lunch, OBTS Lions Club members Aleta Dick and Kathleen Trutschel were presented their Melvin Jones Fellowships, and at the subsequent breakfast, Lion Katie Hamlin received her fellowship and three members were awarded the one Diamond Yellow Gold Progressive Melvin Jones pin: Lions Bobbie Cheh, Greg Evans and Mary Yochum.
It was an amazing Centennial Convention for the Lions, a press release stated. The Multiple District thanked Council Chair Greg Evans and the OBTS Lions Club for all their planning and hard work to make the convention a success.
The Florida Women's Art Association presented its 2021 scholarship award on May 29 to Christine L. Colby, the Fine Arts department chairperson of Seabreeze High School.
According to an email, the scholarship includes a $500 Blick Art Supply gift card to be used for needed student supplies.
Over 300 graduates from Volusia County Schools Class of 2021 earned the Florida Seal of Biliteracy distinction by achieving proficiency in another language, according to a press release.
The state award is meant to prepare students with the language and culture skills that will benefit them in the marketplace. The program encourages students to study world languages and cultures and provides employers and colleges with a formal method for identifying applicants who have achieved language diversity. The program was created four years ago. The seal, gold or silver depending on world language course credits and test scores, are placed on graduates' diplomas and added to their official transcript.
The VCS Class of 2021 earned 237 gold seals, 73 silver seals and another 47 are pending, awaiting results from their advanced placement, international baccalaureate, or Cambridge AICE exams. The students earned distinctions for American Sign Language, Arabic, Bengali, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and Urdu.
Three VCS students graduated with two seals, meaning they are proficient in two languages in addition to English. They are Jacobo Quinones, DeLand High School — gold in French and silver in Spanish; Lauren Grace Rivera, Spruce Creek High School — gold in both French and Spanish; and Molly Grace Li Wagner, Spruce Creek High School — gold in French and silver in Mandarin Chinese.
The Elks National Foundation recently released the names of its 2021 Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship recipients.
According to a press release, the Ormond Beach Elks Lodge had two of the recognized scholars: Logan Pigliacampi, of Seabreeze High School, and Alice Le Roux, of Spruce Creek High School. Both reside in the city of Ormond Beach.
These students will each receive a $4,000 scholarship from the Elks National Foundation. In addition, the Ormond Beach Elks Lodge No. 2193 awarded three $500 scholarships to Seabreeze High School student Amariah Hines, Father Lopez Catholic High School student Flynn Baliton and Sunlake High School student Ashlyn Moore.
The Ormond Beach Police Department recently congratulated Officer Nicholas Stage for earning a bachelor's degree in applied science in supervision management from Daytona State College.
"You showed dedication to your education, while working full time," OBPD wrote on its Facebook page. "This is not an easy feat."
A total of 48% of OBPD officers have earned an associate degree or higher, the post continues.
