Members of the Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club have had a busy few weeks, as they have spent September and the first days of October serving their communities in various activities, as well as hosting the club's annual fish dinner fundraiser.
Some examples of their recent philanthropy include: OBTS Lions President Mary Yochum, Secretary Bobbie Cheh and Maureen Hamilton served cake and ice cream at the recent Family Renew Ice Cream Social; and Lions District Governor Greg Evans, John Thomas, Frank White and Cheh assisted the Ponce Inlet Lions Club with over 80 blood sugar screenings during Port Orange Family Days.
Close to 200 fish dinners were served during the club's fundraiser at Alfies Restaurant, where 22 members cooked, served and cleaned up after the dinner. Over $2,500 were raised.

Ormond Beach artist Daniel Ambrose has donated a signed, framed print to Family Renew Community's Artists with Hearts of Gold fundraiser, to take place on Nov. 7 at The Casements.
The piece, titled "New Beginnings," features egrets flying over Thompson's Creek. Ambrose works and teaches in egg tempera and oils, and is represented in galleries and museums along the East Coast. He is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists and co-founder of the American Tonalist Society.
The fundraiser was described by event coordinator and local artists Karlene McConnell as "a classy-casual evening" with local artist exhibitions and sales, along with a silent auction, live music and refreshments. A portion of all proceeds will benefit Family Renew and its programs.

The Halifax Art Festival is proud to announce the 10th year of the Student Art Exhibit and Competition will be held in conjunction with the festival on Beach Street in Daytona Beach on Nov. 2-3.
The festival has continued the tradition of exhibiting, supporting and rewarding
student art since 1999. The exhibit will be held inside the News-Journal Center at 121 N. Beach St. Volusia County students from public and private schools are selected to display their art, and $4,000 in cash awards, courtesy of The Wessel Foundation, are given to the award-winning students in each grade.
After the festival, award-winning student art will be displayed in the Museum of Arts and Sciences, located at 352 S. Nova Road, for one week. Then, it will travel to ArtHaus, located at 3840 Ridgewood Ave. for another two weeks.

Ormond Beach resident Luke McCurdy was part of 2,200 West Point cadets who participated in the Tunnel to Towers 5K in New York City on Sept. 29.
McCurdy graduated from Seabreeze High School in May, and recently completed basic training at West Point. He was accepted into the Corp of Cadets Class of 2023. He received his West Point nomination from Congressman Michael Waltz.
The Seabreeze High School Leo Club recently selected its officers for the 2019-202 school year.
Since there was a 3-way tie for president, Ailing Coarr, Isabel Martinez and Shelby Puzzifero will share presidential responsibilities. Kayla Sanden-Kolheffer was elected secretary and Ben Kuftic was elected treasurer.
The Leos perform several community service projects benefitting those in-need in Ormond Beach and Holly Hill, as well as the environment. The club was organized in 1999 and is sponsored by the Ormond Beach Lions Club.
Cub Scout Pack 74 celebrated its 61st year of operation with achievement awards and the pack's flag retirement ceremony on Friday, Oct. 4.
The ceremony is where flags, which are not in good condition, are destroyed in a dignified ceremony through burning according to the flag code. During the ceremony, the pack had Embry-Riddle ROTC on hand to present the colors.
Awards presented were those earned by scouts over the summer.
