Local residents gathered for a city-wide Earth Day celebration.

The second grade class of Ormond Beach walked a few blocks down the road Thursday to have a picnic at city hall.

"This is our second year that we've done it," Jennifer Bronson said. "It's great for them to learn how to help save Earth. They love being outdoors."

City hall's lawn was filled with youngsters eating lunch as a part of the 22nd annual Picnic on the Plaza Celebration of Earth Day. The usual vendors at the Ormond Beach Farmers Market made room for more people who wanted to bring awareness to the national holiday. The Ormond Beach Garden Club was handing out free flowers to future gardeners.

"We're here every year," Tom Massfeller said. "We started out with ten boxes of 18 flowers each and there's just a few left. The kids love it. Earth Day keeps the planet beautiful."

Music, food and lessons on going green were in abundance during event many participants called essential.

"Every day should be Earth Day," local Herbalist Alice Potchen said. "Grow food!"
