Police to watch for seat belt infractions.

Law enforcement agencies throughout the state, including Ormond Beach, are stepping up enforcement of wearing seat belts in a special effort called Click It or Ticket that will run through June 1.

Officers are on the lookout for those not wearing their seat belts day or night. The primary targeted group are men ages 18 to 34, who are less likely to wear seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Officers have been trained to spot seat belt violations at night, according to the NHTSA. In 2012, 61% of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night were not wearing their seat belts.

Young adults are dying at a disproportionate rate because they are not wearing their seat belts. According to NHTSA, 62% of 18- to 34-year-olds killed in crashes were not wearing their seat belts.
