Retired Capt. John D. McCarthy was presented with a Quilt of Valor Aug. 7 as a token of appreciation for his service, sacrifice and valor.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 with the hope of showing military service members appreciation and gratitude, and has since expanded to veterans. As of June 1, 2015, they have awarded 119,600 quilts.

McCarthy began his Navy career in 1955 at Pensacola Naval Air Station. He flew F8 Crusaders and was a fighter pilot.
