Local attorney made National Guard judge advocate

Buckmaster Law attorney David Ellzey has accepted a commission as a judge advocate officer for the Florida Air National Guard. Before Buckmaster, Ellzey served in the U.S. Air Force and Florida Air National Guard 16 years, as a weather forecaster, prior to becoming a First Lieutenant for the 125th Fighter Wing's Staff Judge Advocate Office.

"I'm really fortunate to have the opportunity to serve my country and state while also being a member of the local community,” Ellzey said. “My Florida Air Guard family has been there for me for a very long time, and I'm proud to continue my service as a judge advocate.”

Judge Advocates are military officers assigned to provide legal counsel to military members. In the position, he will serve as a citizen airman and be subject to activation for national or state emergencies while performing duty one weekend per month and two weeks during the year.  He was previously activated for Operation Noble Eagle in 2001, as well as Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, in 2004.

"Service in the military is one of the highest callings, and we are proud to have veterans at our office,” said Jeremy Buckmaster, of Buckmaster Law.

Around town …

Loyola University of New Orleans, in association with the Diocese of Orlando, will offer the Loyola Institute for Ministry Distance Education Program in January, in Volusia County, for residents to earn an accredited graduate degree from a Catholic Jesuit university. An information session on the program will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Our Lady of Lourdes Early Education Building, 1020 N. Halifax Drive, in Daytona Beach.

Ormond Beach’s Champion of Choices program, Oct. 3, featuring former WCW/WWE champion Marc Mero, resulted in a $60 donation to the United Way, according to Christina Maguire, city risk manager.  “The event was very well received and so many attendees shared their heartfelt thoughts before they left the venue,” Maguire said.

An anonymous resident donated four kits containing three dog emergency masks each to the Ormond Beach Fire Department last week. The kits cost $75 apiece and were bought from petoxygenmasks.org. The donation is enough to outfit every one of the city’s fire trucks.
