Elks award local scholarships

Ormond Beach Elks Lodge Scholarship Chairman Erika Barger took a trip to Tallahassee Lodge  No. 937 to present Ryan Moore with the first of three college scholarships. Visiting Tallahassee to check out Florida State University, Moore will enter college in the fall.

The second and third scholarship winners — Jessica Marz and Kyleigh Rojas — will be presented awards May 20, at Seabreeze High school. Ormond Beach's Eloi Le Roux was also named a finalist for the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student.

Citizens reunite

Enjoying the confines of Tom Rennick Park, members of the Citizens Academy Class of 2012 gathered beside the sea Tuesday, April 23, for a picnic.

Conversation trumped bocce and horseshoes, as people shared their experiences participating in various county activities: a rally for United Way and a brainstorming session for the Green Volusia organization, among others.

“The Citizens Academy experience was really good — informative and fun,” participant Stan Hetrick said.

The Citizens Academy offers seminars and workshops on various county departments and initiatives, from elections and community services, to budgeting and property assessments.

Meeting weekly for three months, the academy is scheduled to open another session in August. Call 740-5160, visit volusia.org, or email [email protected].
