Humane Society to unveil mobile adoption unit

Soon, pet-lovers will barely need to leave their homes to make new best friends.

Halifax Humane Society will soon unveil a mobile adoption vehicle capable of transporting up to 35 animals, which it plans to send all over North and Central Florida, in an effort to maintain its adoption increases. The vehicle will also allow the society to bring animals to “mega-adoption” events in larger cities, as it did this week, to a seminar in Georgia.

“This vehicle is just the next step as we continue to increase our efforts in raising adoptions while also controlling intake numbers.” Executive Director Miguel Abi-hassan said. The society improved its adoption numbers in 2011 and 2012, by 23% and 20%, respectively. It’s seeing similar increases so far in 2013.

The vehicle was custom built using funds from an American Society grant for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It will also be used as a transport for animals to be spayed or neutered at the Humane Society’s Redinger Clinic, which has sterilized more than 8,000 pets in the year-plus since its opening.

Halifax Humane Society adopted out 2,737 animals in 2010, 3,365 in 2011 and 4,030 in 2012.

Annual report: Halifax Urban Ministries

Halifax Urban Ministries is calling for assistance in meeting its goal of collecting and distributing 500 tons of food this year, though it’s Feed A Family program, a initiative that has more than doubled the past two years.

With 13 distribution centers now throughout Volusia County, the program provides 2,500 local families living under the poverty line a 40-pound bag of groceries to help reduce their expenses and leave more funds for housing costs. HUM is asking that local businesses and nonprofits sponsor the drive by donating dry food items and keeping a collection bin on their property.

Bins are currently located at local fire stations, libraries, churches and stores.

Call 252-0156 to donate or request a bin, or visit http://www.halifaxurbanministries.org.
