Help police academy afford new drug K-9

The Ormond Beach Police Department, along with the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, is currently fundraising for training of a new K-9 and handler, to be used for drug detection. With a goal of $7,800, the fundraiser will benefit the replacement of the police’s current K-9, Dawny, who has been diagnosed with degenerative joint disease.

The funds will also be used to purchase a custom ballistics vest for the dog.

The Ormond Beach Police Department’s 29th-annual Citizen’s Police Academy also begins Wednesday, Sept. 4. The free, 10-week course aims to familiarize citizens with the operations of the Ormond Beach Police Department. Classes are 7 p.m. Wednesdays, at the police station, 170 W. Granada Blvd.

Veterans now get DSC training credit for time served

Daytona State College’s District Board of Trustees approved a policy, Aug. 13, to grant school credit to students with military training, experience or coursework recognized by the American Council on Education.

Daytona State has seen an influx of veterans enrolling in college courses since conflicts in the Middle East began winding down. In 2006-2007, less than 500 veterans were enrolled at the college. Last year, that number grew to nearly 900.

The growth led to the opening of a Veterans Center on the Daytona Beach campus and veteran liaisons on the regional campuses to assist servicemen and women.

The club will resume its regular lunch meetings 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at River Grille on the Tomoka, 950 N. U.S. 1.

Virginia Camella, the organization’s District 3 area vice president, will kick-off the year. Call 441-9250,
