Deland company donated to HUM

Workers from DaVita Labs, a health care company in Deland, came in three cars to Halifax Urban Ministries’ Daytona Beach location last month to donate three shopping carts full of food, diapers and baby items valued at more than $600. They also donated $115 in cash.

“This is not only a blessing to the needy families HUM serves but is another bridge to our recent expansion of services to West Volusia County,” said Mark Geallis, director of community relations and development for HUM.

For LeAnn Shaw, the DaVita employee who organized the benefit, the drive served as an inspiration to workers at her company.

“This generated a lot of excitement with our employees,” she said. “I don’t think there is anything that brings people together like reaching out in service to others.”

Pink Heals Tour visits oncology patients

The Pink Heals Tour stopped Sept. 30, at the Halifax Health — Center for Oncology, 303 N. Clyde Morris Blvd., in Daytona Beach, to visit patients and staff.

Decked out in hot pink, the Pink Heals Tour firefighters stopped by to provide hope, inspiration and hugs to patients. The program, which supports the fight against women’s cancers, provided patients and their families the opportunity to sign and leave messages of encouragement to those fighting cancer on the visiting Pink Heals Tour fire trucks.

Elks go to camp for inspiration

Members of the Ormond Beach Elks Lodge, including Exalted Ruler Jackie Curtis and club officers, took a bus trip last month to spend the day at the 405-acre Florida Elks Youth Camp, in Umatila.

A tour of the grounds was given, and then the group visited the new Bates Aquatic Center. The trip was meant to inspire members to become more active in Elks projects.

Statewide, the club provides millions of dollars to the Army of Hope, Children’s Therapy Services and the Florida Elks Youth Camp.
