Pulling rank: Jonathan McConnell

Seabreeze High School Junior, Jonathan McConnell, 16, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at the end of last month.

He was accompanied by his parents Hank and Karlene McConnel, and Troop 403 Scoutmaster John Rhoades.

Resident fundraises for sick friend

A poker run is scheduled next month to raise funds for Sam Leonard, who was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer last month.

“She has spent a majority of her time giving to the community,” Leonard’s best friend and event organizer Terri Parsons said, “so that the unfortunate people that are stricken with an illness can focus of their treatment and not their mounting medical costs.”

But now the tables have turned, and Leonard is “fighting the battle of her life,” Parson added.

“It’s now time to help (her) in (her) hour of need,” she said.

The run will start at the White Eagle, 5531 U.S. , in Bunnell, then end at the Iron Horse Saloon. All vehicles welcome. Bobby Scott will perform live country rock music. And there will be auctions, raffles and card games.

Donations, sponsors and other advertisers are currently being sought.

Call lead organizer Sherry Fletcher, from the Iron Horse, at 235-3172.

First United: $34,000 down, $65,000 to go

In its first week since announcing the Challenge Campaign 2013, First United Methodist Church, at 336 S. Halifax Drive, has been donated $34,000 from its congregation. The church has already taken a one-third-sized chunk out of its $100,000 total goal, which it hopes to reach by June 30.

Call 677-3581.
