Local Knights of Columbus volunteers host a game day for military veterans, and the League of Women Voters organize two Cuba trips.

Volunteer Bob Simcoe calls Bingo numbers quickly March 7, keeping players at the Emory Bennett Veterans Nursing Home, 1920 Mason Street, in Daytona Beach, on their toes.

And it works. Veterans play enthusiastically, as they do every first Thursday of the month, at the facility’s Bagels and Bingo morning, hosted by the Prince of Peace Catholic Church Knights of Columbus.

Shouts of “Four Corners!” and “Bingo!” punctuate the game. Dogs and cats stroll through to keep everyone company. The main dining room becomes filled with sounds of conversation and laughter while volunteers keep the coffee, hot chocolate and bagels coming.

The last call, “Cover All,” seems to come too soon, but the closing song —“God Bless America,” for example — provides a comfortable closure.

“It really feels good to give back — and it was fun!” says Skip Buck, a volunteer.

Games begin at 10 a.m. To volunteer, email [email protected] .

Sign up for April Cuba trip

The League of Women Voters of Florida will take two springtime trips to Cuba this year, and the club currently has room for 19 participants to tag along.

“Trip Leader Annie Betancourt, a former State Representative and current LWVF board member, has led nine delegations to Cuba in the past two years, as part of the Sisters across the Straits program,” according to FloridaVoter.org.

The trip is meant to prepare women for entrepreneurial roles to stimulate the economy.

The first delegation will travel April 14-18; the second will go in May.
