A backyard sea cow sighting

She was watering plants in the backyard of her John Anderson Drive home, when Nannine Dahlen spotted a bump in the water. Turns out it was a manatee.

“I happened to look up to see this guy,” Dahlen said. “He was eating all the tender grasses on the shoreline and he stayed for quite a while in order to get his fill.”

Pathways students venture down city’s memory lane

Fifth-graders from Pathways Elementary School took a field trip this month to The Casements, at 25 Riverside Drive, to tour the grounds and learn about its history.

A total of 100 children, teachers and parents attended and learned about the building’s place on the National Register of Historic Places, the life of John D. Rockefeller and the role residents had in rescuing the building and overseeing its renovation.

Riverbend Community Church, at 2080 W. Granada Blvd., is changing its Sunday morning schedule, effective June 2.

Morning worship will now be at 10:30 a.m., with Bible Fellowship Groups at 9 a.m.

PetSmart sponsors $20 spay, neuter promo

If your pet is under six months old, it’s eligible for a $20 spay or neuter during June, as part of a PetSmart Charities promotion at the Halifax Humane Society.

“Many owners put off the procedure and wait until the puppy or kitten is six to eight months old,” says HHS executive director Miguel Abi-hassan.  “But by then, a litter of puppies or kittens can be born.”

Kittens can get pregnant as early as 4 months old, puppies after five months.
