Plus, back-to-school help: The Jewish Federation has been offered a $25,000 funding match for needy kids; and, a weekend motorcycle run aims to supply students with the tools they need to learn.

When the United Way of Volusia-Flagler put out its annual Day of Action call last month, Ormond Beach firefighter Carrie Davis jumped at the chance to help in the coordinator counties-wide effort. Choosing to assist in the Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program, she spearheaded pet food collections, asking for dry food donations from city staff.

By day’s end, she had collected more than 260 pounds.

With the assistance of fellow firefighters, the food was packaged for delivery to area seniors and their pets.

Help the Jewish Federation collection $25,000 for kids

In the past 17 years, the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties has donated backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 65,000 local, needy elementary, middle and high school students. And this year, they’ll have a little extra help.

The Abrams & Kaplan Foundation, a New York-based nonprofit, has offered to match the federation’s funding for the drive up to $25,000. One backpack full of supplies costs $25, and recipients are chosen by counselors from 80 nearby schools.

Two-day stays at Homewood Suites will be given to those who donate $50 to the drive, while supplies last.

The Jewish Federation also runs the Jerry Dolinger Food Bank, which feeds about 590 families weekly.
